On 3 November 2023, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the districts of Rukum and Jajarkot in Nepal, devastating communities and claiming over 157 lives, with an equal number injured. The disaster destroyed more than 35,000 homes and critical infrastructure, forcing survivors to endure harsh conditions under the open sky. In response, the MIT Group Foundation, alongside the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and its Global NRN Foundation, launched a comprehensive relief and reconstruction initiative.

Immediate Relief Efforts

Recognising the urgent need for action, the MIT Group Foundation deployed both land and air teams to the affected areas. Led by Dr. Shesh Ghale, the teams distributed essential supplies such as food and blankets to those in need, and conducted detailed damage assessments in collaboration with local authorities and community representatives. This coordinated effort not only provided immediate relief but also gathered critical insights to shape the foundation’s long-term response.

The relief report highlighted the widespread destruction in Athbiskot Municipality (Rukum) and Rauth Gaun (Jajarkot), where up to 80% of homes were destroyed in some areas. Emotional stories of resilience emerged, such as the rescue of a two-month-old infant trapped under debris for 12 hours. The relief teams also identified urgent needs for food, shelter, and medical care, underscoring the importance of immediate and sustained intervention.

Reconstruction Initiative

A cornerstone of the recovery plan is the commitment to rebuild 28 homes in Lata Tole, Aathabiskot Municipality-13, Rukum Pashchhim. The initiative, formalised through an agreement with Mayor Rabi KC of Aathabiskot Municipality, reflects the Foundation’s dedication to creating resilient and sustainable infrastructure.

The new homes will adhere to government protocols for earthquake resistance and will utilise local resources and tools, fostering community participation in the rebuilding process. Mayor KC expressed optimism about the swift commencement of construction, which is expected to restore stability and hope to the affected families.

Investing in Education for the Future

In addition to housing reconstruction, the Foundation is establishing a scholarship fund at Janajagaran Secondary School in Gaubari. Supported by the Nepali diaspora in Belgium, this Rs. 600,000 fund will provide educational opportunities to earthquake victims, as well as underprivileged and orphaned students. This initiative reaffirms the Foundation’s commitment to empowering future generations through education.

A Call for Collaboration

The scale of the disaster demands a united response. The MIT Group Foundation extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families and calls on local and international communities to join in these recovery efforts. By working together, we can rebuild not just homes, but resilient and thriving communities.
