MIT Group Foundation and National Child Rights Council Partner to Support Children Affected by Bhotekoshi Flood

MIT Group Foundation has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Nepal’s National Child Rights Council to establish a coordinated framework for the long-term education, protection and wellbeing of eligible children affected by the 2026 Bhotekoshi flood.
The agreement marks an important step in MIT Group Foundation’s Nepal Flood 2026 initiative and establishes a formal framework for supporting children who lost one or both parents as a direct result of the flood and are experiencing economic and social hardship.
Under the agreement, the program is expected to support up to 110 verified school-age children. Priority will be given to children who have lost both parents and those assessed as being at greatest risk.
Support will be tailored to each child’s circumstances through approved individual education and wellbeing plans. Depending on assessed need, assistance may include school and examination fees, books and learning materials, uniforms, health care and insurance, nutrition and living costs, transport, psychosocial care, child protection and family-based care.
Subject to continued eligibility and participation, support is intended to continue through completion of Grade 12.
Working in partnership with NCRC
The National Child Rights Council will coordinate the identification and verification of eligible children in collaboration with relevant local authorities and government records.
MIT Group Foundation will provide approved financial and technical support and oversee monitoring, reporting and financial transparency.
Both organisations will also work to protect the privacy and dignity of participating children, avoid duplication of assistance and regularly review their educational progress, health, protection and wellbeing.

The MoU forms part of a broader program of field engagement undertaken by MIT Group Foundation following the Bhotekoshi flood.

MIT Group Foundation also visited temporary accommodation in Lalitpur where children affected by the flood are currently staying.
The visit provided an opportunity to observe living conditions and better understand immediate and longer-term needs, including education, health, nutrition, accommodation and psychosocial wellbeing.
These visits are helping inform the next stages of implementation alongside formal beneficiary verification and individual needs assessment.
A long-term commitment
MIT Group Foundation’s proposal provides an indicative long-term planning envelope of up to NPR 578.5 million over approximately ten years.
Actual expenditure will depend on the verified number of eligible children, their individual needs, approved annual and child-specific plans, available complementary assistance and applicable governance approvals.
The first-year planning limit is up to NPR 300,000 per child and is not an automatic fixed grant.
MIT Group Foundation Chairman Dr Shesh Ghale has described the initiative as a commitment extending beyond immediate disaster relief.
“For us, this is about more than funding. It is about making a lasting commitment to support these children as they grow and helping ensure that the hardship they have experienced does not determine the opportunities they have in life.”
He added:
“Above all, we want them to know they have not been forgotten.”
Next steps
Implementation will proceed through the identification and verification of eligible children, assessment of individual circumstances, development of education and wellbeing plans, annual implementation arrangements and ongoing monitoring.
Through the partnership, NCRC and MIT Group Foundation have reaffirmed their shared commitment to helping flood-affected children continue their education in safety and dignity and build a secure future within supportive family and community environments.
