The 2026 floods in Nepal have had a devastating impact on families and communities.
In the Bhotekoshi flood, children have lost one or both parents and are now facing uncertainty about their education, wellbeing and future.
MIT Group Foundation is working towards a long-term program to support up to 110 eligible school-age children affected by the Bhotekoshi flood, with an initial focus on Rasuwa and priority given to children facing severe economic hardship.
Supporting children beyond the immediate disaster
The impact of a flood does not end when the water recedes. For children who have lost a parent, the effects can continue for many years.
MIT Group Foundation’s proposed program is designed to provide long-term education and wellbeing support, helping eligible children continue their schooling through to the completion of Grade 12.
Support is expected to include school and examination fees, books and learning materials, uniforms, transport, food and accommodation where required, insurance, psychosocial care and other essential needs.
Our aim is to provide stability and continuity for children who have experienced profound loss, so they can remain in education and continue building their future.
Working with communities and the Government in Nepal
MIT Group Foundation has submitted a formal proposal to the Government of Nepal and is currently working towards a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding.
Under the proposed framework, relevant government and Local Level authorities would lead the identification and documentary verification of eligible children, help prevent duplication of assistance, facilitate school placement and support monitoring of the program.
MIT Group Foundation would retain oversight through annual budgets, individual progress and expenditure reporting, audit provisions and other accountability measures. The proposed framework also places importance on protecting the privacy, dignity and wellbeing of participating children.
The program remains subject to finalisation of the Memorandum of Understanding, verification of eligible beneficiaries, MIT Group Foundation Board approval and agreed annual implementation plans.
A long-term commitment
The current planning basis is for up to 110 children, with support potentially extending over approximately 10 years.
The indicative program envelope is approximately NPR 525.9 million, with a further NPR 52.6 million contingency, representing a potential total commitment of up to NPR 578.5 million. These figures are indicative and will be adjusted according to the verified number of children, their grade levels and actual approved costs.
