The 2026 floods in Nepal have had a devastating impact on families and communities.
In the Bhotekoshi flood, children lost one or both parents and are now facing uncertainty around their education, wellbeing and future.
MIT Group Foundation is developing a long-term program, in partnership with Nepal’s National Child Rights Council, to support up to 110 eligible school-age children affected by the flood. Priority will be given to children who have lost both parents and those experiencing the greatest economic and social hardship.
Supporting children beyond the immediate disaster
The impact of a flood does not end when the water recedes. For children who have lost a parent, the consequences can continue for many years.
MIT Group Foundation’s program is designed to provide long-term education, protection and wellbeing support so eligible children can continue their schooling through to the completion of Grade 12.
Depending on each child’s assessed needs and approved individual plan, support may include school and examination fees, books and learning materials, uniforms, health care and insurance, nutrition and living costs, transport, psychosocial care, child protection and family-based care.
The aim is to provide stability and continuity for children who have experienced profound loss, helping them remain in education and continue building their future.
Partnership with the National Child Rights Council
MIT Group Foundation has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Nepal’s National Child Rights Council to establish a coordinated framework for the identification, protection and long-term support of eligible children affected by the Bhotekoshi flood.
Under the partnership, NCRC will coordinate beneficiary identification and verification in accordance with applicable law and government records, working with relevant local authorities.
MIT Group Foundation will provide approved financial and technical support and oversee monitoring, reporting and financial transparency.
Both organisations will work to protect the privacy and dignity of participating children, avoid duplication of assistance and regularly review education, health, protection and wellbeing.
Understanding needs on the ground
As part of the program’s development, MIT Group Foundation representatives have undertaken field visits in Nepal to better understand the circumstances facing affected children and families.
A field visit to Nuwakot provided an opportunity to assess conditions, engage with local stakeholders and understand the needs of communities affected by the Bhotekoshi flood.
MIT Group Foundation also visited temporary accommodation in Lalitpur where flood-affected children are staying. The visit helped the Foundation better understand immediate and longer-term needs including education, health, nutrition, accommodation and psychosocial wellbeing.
These field visits are helping inform the next stages of implementation alongside formal beneficiary verification and individual needs assessment.
A long-term commitment
The current planning basis is for support for up to 110 eligible children, potentially extending over approximately 10 years.
The indicative long-term planning envelope is up to NPR 578.5 million, including contingency. Actual expenditure will depend on the verified number and needs of beneficiaries, approved annual and child-specific plans, available complementary assistance and applicable governance approvals.
The first-year planning limit is up to NPR 300,000 per child and is not an automatic fixed grant.
How the program will work
The program will progress through a structured process of:
beneficiary identification and verification;
assessment of each child’s circumstances and needs;
development of individual education and wellbeing plans;
approval of annual implementation arrangements;
delivery of approved support; and
ongoing monitoring, reporting and review.
This approach is intended to ensure support is targeted, transparent and responsive to each child’s circumstances.

For a child who has lost a parent, continuing their education can provide stability, opportunity and a path forward.
MIT Group Foundation ’s goal is to support eligible children not only in the immediate aftermath of the flood, but through the years that follow.
A child who has lost a parent should not also lose the opportunity to continue their education and build a future.
