The MIT Group Foundation’s unwavering commitment to fostering education and sustainable livelihoods continues to make a transformative impact in the lives of children and families in Gaunkharka, Nepal. As the latest report from the Sunrise Children’s Association Inc. (SCAI) reveals, the Gaunkharka Education Scholarship Program, supported by the Foundation, has achieved remarkable milestones between July and September 2024.

Nurturing Educational Growth

This quarter saw an impressive 43 home visits and 15 school visits conducted by the SCAI team, ensuring the holistic well-being and academic progress of 40 sponsored children. These efforts included distributing essential school materials such as notebooks and stationery to 29 students, with the remaining distribution scheduled for October. The personal engagement with students, teachers, and families has been instrumental in monitoring attendance, participation in extracurricular activities, and overall progress.

Notably, three students successfully passed the Secondary Education Exams (SEE) chance examination, achieving commendable results. Among them, Mendo Tamang, a 16-year-old student, has set her sights on becoming an Agriculture Technician, inspired by her experience and the support she has received through the scholarship program.

Fostering Career Aspirations

Recognising the importance of career guidance, a “Career Counselling” orientation was organised for youth in classes 9 to 11. The sessions provided insights into diverse career pathways, including the Army, Police, Civil Service, and entrepreneurial ventures. The interactive workshops, attended by six enthusiastic participants, were led by senior professionals who shared valuable recruitment advice and skill-building tips.

Supporting Livelihood Development

The Gaunkharka program extends its impact beyond education, addressing the economic challenges faced by families. The Dupcheshor Krishi Saharkari cooperative, established by guardians of sponsored children, has become a vital resource for financial empowerment. Through initiatives like goat breeding and training in agriculture and livestock management, families have significantly improved their income.

Mangale Tamang’s story exemplifies this transformation. With training and a small loan facilitated by the cooperative, he successfully expanded his farming activities, raising goats and buffalos. Today, his annual income has risen to 200,000 NPR, enabling him to support his family and secure a brighter future for his daughter, Mendo.

Driving Transparency and Community Engagement

The program’s transparency and stakeholder engagement are upheld through annual social audits. This year’s audit, attended by municipal leaders, students, and parents, provided a comprehensive update on project achievements and financial expenditure. Such initiatives reinforce accountability and ensure community involvement in decision-making.

Gratitude and Shared Vision

The MIT Group Foundation’s support continues to play a pivotal role in the success of the Gaunkharka Education Scholarship Program. By enabling access to education and fostering sustainable livelihoods, the Foundation continues to empowers children and families to overcome adversity and achieve their dreams.

Together, we are building a brighter, more equitable future—one step, one child, and one family at a time. As we celebrate these achievements, the MIT Group Foundation remains committed to creating lasting change in partnership with SCAI and the resilient communities of Nepal.
